Waning, waxing, waxing, waning, huh?

I was reading the paper today and was perusing the weather section when I realized that the moon phases didn’t match up to how I thought they should match up. My rule of thumb for picking out waning over waxing is to think alphabetically about which is the Left or Right true edge. Left true edge maps to Waning since Waning comes before Waxing, alphabetically.  Similarly, Right true edge maps to Waxing. Well, this works in the northern hemisphere, but apparently is reversed for the southern hemisphere. It all makes perfect sense when you realize the moon is upside down, but for those few moments before it all came together for me, it was really confusing. Our moon phases are the same, if it’s Waning up north, it’s Waning down south, but the true edges are opposite. So, I figure the moon phases look backwards down here, too. What northerners see as first quarter, looks like last quarter down here, for example. Pretty neat difference that I wouldn’t have thought of prior to living here.  🙂
